    Part 4b: Triggered Segments

Triggered segments are available with the SparkCampaign feature set, and are unavailable for other Sparklist packages. If you'd like to upgrade to the SparkCampaign package, contact your account representative.

Triggered segments are segments that contain one or more trigger clauses. These triggers create a specific event or date that happens when the mailing is to be sent. Anything else about the member that does not specify exactly when the mailing is to be sent is not a trigger clause, but a "regular" clause. The mailing is triggered by a particular event in time, such as a particular date or anniversary, a clickthrough action, or a purchase. The result is that the mailing to the segment will automatically be sent when the trigger clause(s) are met. Note that triggered segments should be used in conjunction with triggered and/or sequential mailings.

Creating a triggered segment

This example shows how to create a simple triggered segment that will send a follow-up mailing out when the member first opens any mailing.

  1. Select the Segments tab.

  2. Click create new triggered segment. This takes you to the Segments: New Triggered Segment: Essentials page.

  3. Enter Segment Name: follow_up_mailing. Note that there can be no spaces in the segment name.

  4. Enter a Description: follow up mailing after member opens first mailing.

  5. Click the Insert trigger button.

  6. On the Action tab, select Action "opened" and Mailing "any mailing the first time".

  7. Click insert.

  8. A block of code will appear in the Query box, starting with this:

--Action Trigger: opened mailing 'any_mailing' for the first time EXISTS (SELECT clicktracking_.TimeClicked_ FROM...

  9. The Summary field will describe this as follows:

--Action Trigger: opened mailing 'any_mailing' for the first time

The window will now look like this:

  10. Click on Save and Test. You will be taken to the Segments: Test Segment page, where you will be prompted to enter a runtime range to test the trigger on:

  11. You will then be taken to the Segments: Test Segments page, where you can see the query generated and a sample of the addresses pulled.

  12. You can edit the segment here or click OK to go back to the main segments page, where your new triggered segment will now be on the list. When you send a mailing, you can now include (or exclude) this or any other segment you've created.
